Hello Artsy friends. . . how are you this fine day?

I love these months of January/February. . . not for the weather (that I can do without, yuk) but for the time it allows me to research and draw.

A few art friends of mine and I began discussion on The Right Brain Business Plan a few months ago, we would meet once a week for lunch and plans which has helped me tremendously to figure out my direction. We took a bit of a break over Christmas but now we have started up again.

We are taking it slow, reading a chapter a week, then discussing unless there is a great deal to consider then spending more time if needed. I like to look back a previous chapters when I find that I'm getting off track or questioning my focus. Jennifer Lee has a unique way of simplifying business for the art minded. . . a good read if you need help fine tuning your art business.

I've also been drafting a t-shirt design for our Tai Chi group for their grand opening. . . it's a start, I hope the powers that be like it, it was a lot of fun to do.

So that's what I have going on for the start of my week so far.

Draw With Me - Week 4

Hi there my Artsy friends...so glad you stopped by.

I'm sitting in my favourite chair with my quilt covering my legs in the early morning hours of a Saturday. The house is so very quiet and still...the time of day I love the most...it's when I do my best thinking (then and in the middle of the night...sigh).

As I said last week we'll be talking about erasers, stubs, brushes (yes brushes) and what ever else we may need to help us with our drawing endeavor.

As with pencils there are many types of erasers which have attributes geared towards different uses. I'll tell you the type of erasers I use and why.

The main type I use is the white drafting eraser in a flat rectangle and a pen type. Both of these are excellent for smooth white paper to lift most graphite completely off (unless you have been adding layers of 8B to achieve a deep shadow) the flat for large areas, the pen type for tighter areas. Electric or battery erasers use the white as well...these are very handy again for tight areas.

The next is a knead-able...definitely a must. You know those grey ones that are like Play-doh. You can shape this to fit in any form and lift out unwanted graphite or lighten an area to add texture or pattern. There are many more but these are the erasers I use.

Stubs are a must for blending and softening edges (I use to use my finger) and you can get these in different sizes...I prefer the small ones again they lend themselves well for detail.

I know I mentioned brushes and yes I use a goat hair brush...Why you ask? They are fabulous for brushing away those little bits or eraser, pencil dust etc. Any brush will do but the goat hair is so soft and gentle...never a problem for you drawing. I have one for graphite and a couple for coloured pencil. You can wash them up when they get too soiled to start a new drawing.

Another useful item is the pencil extender. When your pencils get a little short and hard to handle you don't have to throw them away you pop them into an extender and you 'extend' (ha ha) the life of said pencil. . . I like that.

Now I don't think I left anything out but I will mention things as our drawing goes along.

This Week In The Studio

Hello my fellow studio dwellers...I hope you are finding things to do on these cold wintery days.

This is the time of year I spend drawing...I don't have any shows booked, there are no Farmers Markets open (nor would I want to be there unless they were heated)...a great time to focus on what I love the most...drawing.

I am researching right now...I have quite a few ideas in mind, I just have to get them organized...though I wish they would quit popping into my head in the middle of my REM.

I'm also catching up on some of my letter writing. I don't always get all my cards sent at Christmas so I find January a lovely time to sit in a sunny window, looking out at my frosty surroundings and pen a note to friends and family.

I love me some lovely note paper/note cards, something I'm always on the look out for...kind of an obsession really....but you know I have a thing for paper.

I hope you can reconnect with some friends too.

Draw With Me - Week 3

Hello my Artsy friends...lovely of you to pop by.

So it is week 3 and as I promised in my last installment we are going to talk pencils. You can draw with just about anything...as long as it makes a mark on a surface you're good to go but wait...is it that simple? Well yes I think it is and I have tried many a drawing utensil...that's where the fun is.

When you enjoy drawing, anything will work but (and there is always a but) not all pencils are created equal. Your every day pencil is usually a HB and sometimes a 2B. Pencils are graded on their hardness or blackness. Some think that the B stands for softness but in truth it's how black the pencil is and for a pencil to achieve it's degree of black it becomes softer so that is the connection. You can achieve a fabulous black with an 8B. For me this is huge as I love the contrast between the darks and light...now we're talking.

You also have H for yes hard pencils and F for fine point (more for drafting). You can buy pencils in sets or as singles.

For years I used Faber Castell pencils just because that is what my teachers suggested when I attended Art School...so...they should know right? Yes, they are very nice pencils...I still use them though I do use Derwent pencils now as well...I have obtained a nice drawing set, Graphic Soft 12 tin, so for this project I will be using them exclusively to see if I find any differences in how they perform. I like a new smooth, creamy pencil...I absolutely cringe at a dry graphite or a pencil that has foreign particles (big shiver)

So now we have chosen paper and pencils...next week I'll discuss erasers, stubs and other tools we made need.

This Week In The Studio

Hello my fellow Artsies...I hope yourJanuary is progressing nicely.

I have been in the need of a new desktop computer for my office for a little while now but like most Idon't seem to have the time to do much research.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma though...do Ibuy a Mac or a PC? I know most artists will tell me Mac by far and Iwould have to agree (I've always wanted a Mac) but it does irk methat they cost so much more...why is that? What makes them that muchbetter? How has Apple created such a phenomenon? I hate to giveinto the hype...am I caving to product pressure?

Can you help me...do you have anopinion? Help me make my decision...please.

For now my oldest is letting me use hisnew 23” monitor...oh it makes a world of difference to have a niceclear (large) screen.

So all I have to do now is convincemyself that this will be money well spent.

Post Script Our internet has been intermittent the last couple of days....makes it very difficult to keep on track. I will be posting my regulars so just check back...I'll get it here as soon as I can.

Draw With Me - Week 2

Hello my Artsy friends...so glad you had a moment and stopped by.

So here we are...week 2...are you ready to choose some paper? Just to let you know I am a paper fanatic...but that's another story. (sigh) I will digress at another time.

From my experience I have narrowed down the paper pool quite a bit just out of personal preference and that is what you should do as well. Try a bunch of different papers...colours, weights, finishes and you will quickly discover which papers will bring out the best of your work and which ones you really enjoy working on. This I think is key...drawing is an experience, something so joyful you must make it the very best you can...it will reflect in the finished work...it will shine.

I tend to go through phases...by this I mean extended periods in which I will use only one type of paper, pencil etc. until I feel I have exhausted all I can from the experience. This doesn't mean I won't revisit this whole scenario at a later date but if it's working who am I to tamper with it?

This also works if you are creating a series...you want to keep the same feel, the same energy (there is my word for this year) to keep the emotion flowing...to bring it full circle.

So enough about that...on to choosing paper. The best that I have found that work for my style of drawing is Bristol...smooth Bristol to be more precise...though Bristol vellum works very nicely as well. My pencil work involves a great deal of detail and using a smooth surface allows me to get into the tiniest of crevasses to create shadow or line. The papers that I use the most are Strathmore 2-ply Bristol smooth (400 series), Strathmore 100lb. Bristol vellum (300 series) and Canson 100lb. Bristol vellum (Foundation series). The vellum tends to have a bit more of a 'texture' to it's look though it remains very smooth.

For this new drawing I will be using the Canson 100lb. Bristol vellum...I'll try to show you the texture thing though you may have to head to your favourite art store (oh darn, such a hardship) to check them out for yourselves. (as she skips happily to her car)

Post Script: I have done many a drawing on watercolour paper just to have the texture thing happening and it works fabulously, though a note of caution...it's a little rougher on your pencils and you may end up covered in a dusting of graphite and it gets everywhere...but that's entirely up to you.

This Week In The Studio

Hello my Artsy friends...I hope this day finds you well.

At the beginning of each new year I like to choose a word that I will use to inspire me throughout my daily journey.

Last year the word I chose was 'OPEN'...to be open to new experiences, open for change and open to being more flexible. It worked very well for me having a reminder when I would find myself floundering with indecision or wariness...I would say to myself 'Just Be Open'. On occasion I would be reminded by the universe with little signs around town...doors to shops will have the word open on it, most do but I would only notice when I needed it most.

This year I have chosen a word but usually need to live with it for a while to see if it's going to be THE WORD or not...mull it around so to speak and yes I did like it so.....

The word I chose for this year is 'ENERGY'.

You can see it here on my metal bulletin board that hangs above my desk in the studio...it will greet me every day and remind me of what I need. I suggest you find a place for your word so it pops out to keep you motivated as well.

I hope to have energy to complete much more this year...the energy to stay on track and not get discouraged, to feel energy and share it with my friends and to feel energized by every aspect of my Art career.

Bring it on 2012...I'm ready.

Post Script...On another note, on my recent visit to the new IKEA (Oh so wonderful) I grabbed a little metal cabinet for the studio. I have been eying these for quite some time so I treated myself as a 'welcome' to 2012...yeah! I love to buy new things for my studio...it's very uplifting...a good way to start the year off, don't you think?

Hello my Artsy friends...hope this day finds you well and inspired.

Now no further delays...for my new...news, funny choice of words (chuckle to myself).

For the New Year I have decided I would like to share with you my process...how I begin, work through and finish a drawing. I have been asked numerous times to do this but wasn't sure I could put it down in words but with photos I think it is possible.

Every Thursday I will publish a new installment of 'Draw With Me' (I couldn't come up with a clever play of words for this weekly endeavor..darn) I will post the progression of a new drawing from choosing materials such as pencils, paper to photographing your subject and of course the weekly growth of the drawing. I hope you will drop by to see how I'm getting along.

So to begin I usually gather all my materials in one place...my subject, paper, pencils, tools and figure out what I'm going to need for this particular drawing like in the photo above. I usually have an idea in my mind of how I want a drawing to look but often it will take on a life of it's own as it develops...I love that. The drawing I will be starting is a Heirloom drawing...baby shoes. You can see what this is at the top of my page, centre under the title.

This Week In The Studio

Hello my Artsy friends, nice to see you. Happy New Year! (Big Hug)

Did you ring in the New Year in grand fashion? We were to attend a local potluck with friends and family which is fitting as we live in a wonderful little rural community. Home cooked goodness with great company...couldn't ask for anything more but I got sick and found myself home with my boys...I was where I love most. One was cooking and the other was playing music...my honey and I watching the hockey game.

I was pleasantly surprised the other day when I received an e-mail from the lovely Kirsty at the Derwent Pencil Company in Cumbria, UK informing me of my winning yet another bunch of pencils. This time I received a blister pack (plastic wrapped on card board) of six metallic pencils...I absolutely love getting packages in the mail, just like a kid at Christmas...oh wait it was Christmas (giggle).

These are the colours in the pack... Silver 80, Pewter 81, Gold 82, Antique Gold 83, Bronze 84, Copper 85. The interesting thing is that they are watersoluble...oh the possibilities. For hints and tips visit www.pencils.co.uk

Merry Christmas Friends

Hello my Artsy friends...so nice you could stop by...thanks.

My oldest son is home for Christmas so that is the best present I could imagine...my family being together gives me such a sense of calmness...I drink in these moments.

I was reminiscing the other evening thinking of when I was young. My Mom cooking up a storm, making meat pie, preparing the turkey. My Dad shoveling the umpteen centimetres of snow that would fall, my sister teasing the heck out of me. I would get so excited thinking of Santa...going to midnight mass then...presents. We would go visiting Christmas Eve...Aunts and Uncles, cousins and friends, neighbours. This was just a time filler as far as I was concerned but now I understand and feel what my parents were trying to instill...the importance of family/friends and to appreciate our time together. That is what I cherish the most now... being together and sharing a meal, sharing a moment.

I would like to take this moment to wish you a very Merry Christmas from my family to yours...I hope your day is peaceful and filled with love and joy.

This Week at Locust Tree Studio

Hello Artsy friends, I'm so glad you stopped by...I know you must be busy.

I completed my Christmas orders over the weekend so I have a few finishing touches to do before I can deliver them and then I'll be back to baking and sharing a cookie with Spike.

I will miss having my studio time for a bit but if I have to give up time Christmas is a great reason to do so. Christmas is all about family for me...sharing food and enjoying each others company.

I have started my plan for the new year...I'm excited to get going on some new drawings. Oh wait til you see what I am planning...I will share as soon as I can. There may be more feathers, shoes and famous people.

More Pendants to Come

Hello fellow Artsies. Oh I'm so excited I just had to share, my pendant trays have finally arrived. I know it's a crazy time of year to be ordering on-line but I ran out so now I'm back on track.

I ordered a few different sizes this time...it's kind of exciting thinking of the new and wonderful things I will be creating. These have become a very popular way to share my art.

My honey has gone to play hockey, the house is quiet, a wonderful aroma wafts from the oven which slowly bakes my Christmas Nuts & Bolts.

I love receiving things in the mail, it's like getting presents.

This Week in the Studio

Welcome Artsies...I'm so glad you popped by.

Are you getting busy? This time of year can get so crazy it's hard to keep it all in perspective...one day at a time works for me.

This week among other things I'm replenishing my stock of hand drawn book marks...they are so much fun to do. I love to share these with people as I'm an avid reader...it's one of those luxuries I hope we continue to pass on to the ones we love. Watercolour paper, Sakura black pen and a few coloured pencils...good times.

I also love to bake shortbread cookies and share them...I have so far made 20 dozen and counting. It's the one activity that can put me in the Christmas spirit (that and the Yuletide Fireplace station with the burning logs) I don't actually bake these in my studio but I do eat them there at break time with a nice cuppa.

This is Spike, my dear friend Wendy bought him for me a little while ago...isn't he wonderful? He's who I share my tea and cookies with in the studio.

I hope you take time to enjoy this Christmas season and the people you love.

This Week at the Studio

Hello my fellow Artsies . . . how fare you this week?

I wanted to share with you a little of what's been going on at Locust Tree studio this week. I always seem to be busy and that's a wonderful feeling . . . I rise in the morning and can't wait to get down to my studio, pull out my soft retro fuchsia chair and switch on the desk lamp.

Sunday or early Monday morning I sit with my morning coffee and make a list for the week . . . things that I would like to accomplish, things that have been rattling around my brain, things that keep me awake . . . things that make me very excited.

I try to balance my work as best I can, a little office work, a bit of maintenance and of course creating. When I maintain a bit of everything it keeps the flow (and me) balanced. . . stops me from getting too crazy.

I've been putting together some pendant necklaces with my art in them. I print out my images and painstakingly trim each image to fit the tray (the trays aren't all equal and each print requires custom fitting). Once I have about 10 to 12 ready I mix the resin and pour. It's a little time consuming but I just love to see them come alive..

You may be wondering why I call my studio Locust Tree Studio . . . here's why. I live in the country about a half an hour from the capital of our great land, it's a beautiful place to be. We have fifty acres of land and many natural growing trees. At the end of our lane is where the old homestead once stood and I imagine the dwellers brought with them plants from their home land. There is now a wonderful grove of Locust trees which in the spring buzz with bees searching for the sweetest smelling nectar you can imagine . . . just lovely.

Drawings Unfinished

Hello my Artsies . . . I hope you are feeling artilicious (I know that's not a word but it should be)

I was chatting with an artist friend on Twitter last week and she was pulling out a folder with all her unfinished drawings in hopes of finishing them . . . or a few anyway. It's funny how we seem to be riding the same wave . . . I was contemplating just that.

I don't know if you're like me but I have so many ideas swirling around my brain that if I don't get them down on paper I may burst which results in an ever growing folder of unfinished projects. The good thing about this is that when I have a few minutes I can pull out a drawing and jump right in.

Something I have learned to do is to make a legend of sorts in the outer margin of the colours I've used for each drawing then when I get back to it it's easy to find my scheme.

It's a nice feeling when I want to do a little drawing I don't have to do any layout, no planning just jump right in . . . Some days I need a no brain required kind of day and a notion.

Maybe you have some 'unfinished business' . . . take a look, it's fun to see what might be hiding and worth revisiting.

Paper Love

Good morning my Artsy friends.

A seamstress loves the colours of fabric. . . a knitter loves the feel of wool. . . a cabinet maker loves the smell of oak. . . I love the texture of paper. I will buy paper just to be able to look at it, I don't need to have a purpose for it, it just has to sit there.

I was out to our local art store (Wallack's). . . oh, just to look. . . honest, and decided that a few sheets of light weight watercolour paper was needed to make a new journal (just what I need more paper. . . believe you me, I have paper) but there is something about a fresh, untouched piece of pristine paper. It represents a fresh start, a new beginning for me. . . possibilities.

My favourite paper is 140lb cold press watercolour paper - I know it's a little heavy but lovely texture indeed, throw a wash on it and you're ready to go. My second is a smooth Bristol - great for writing, pen and ink, coloured pencil - it all depends on the overall effect you are looking for. Thirdly, a parchment with it's slightly transparent crispness. Oh I could go on, why stop at three? I'll save that for another day.

Now I don't by any means limit myself to plain white paper, I have sheets of handmade paper that you would die for - works of art in themselves and I will eventually find the perfect project to use these in but sometimes it is hard to let them go, to cut into that perfect sheet.

Art is All Around

Hello Art Buddies, hope you are keeping well. . . and busy.

As I sit in the early morning hours, eating my ancient grain (well done) toast smothered in sunflower seed butter, drinking oj and coffee, I'm reflecting on the fabulous artists I meet and what they are creating right here in my own back yard. Well, not HERE in my backyard, albeit lovely and inspiring, but you know what I mean.

Most of my dear friends are creatives and I see what they are creating daily . . . the world is a wondrous place . . . and there is so much more to discover.

In this world of mass produced...well, everything, I am constantly amazed at the beautiful things I can find . . . right here!

Some pals of mine asked me to go check out a couple of shows this weekend and I'm so glad they asked. It is truly fantastical to me that after all the shows I have been to that I can stumble upon something so unique that I've never seen before . . . oh the creative process!

In particular we attended the Ottawa Glass Bead Artist Show . . . this was my first time and I've got to tell ya it's a little overwhelming at first. The colour, the texture . . . the infinite beauty. These Artists are creating mini works of art within art. They not only design beautiful pieces of jewelry but are creating one of a kind glass beads in which they incorporate into their creations as well . . . FANTABULOUS!

It's fall, my favourite time of year and that means changing leaves, Sunday drives and wonderful local Art Shows.

I have been participating in the Uniquely Goulbourn - Fall Art And Craft Show for the last couple of years and work with the museum girls to help organize the artists. We have a fabulous little museum in the heart of our community and love to invite people to come and experience a little bit of history while enjoying special events like this show.

New Drawing Complete

Good Sunday morning fellow artsies...how goes things?

I would like to apologize for being absent but we are experiencing technical difficulties with our internet...I think that's what they tell you when then have no idea what the problem is so I post when I can and check in between.

It is very frustrating and disturbing at the same time to realize how dependent we have become on our electronic communication and how 'out of sorts' we feel when we are unable to check in on our friends.

One good thing about not being connected is that I have learned that I can accomplish quite a bit when not worried about Twitter, Facebook and e-mail so I think I will adopt this new work process and see where it takes me.

No worries, I'll still be around just in spirit not mind.

All that said I have completed a new drawing this week...yeah! It's a 10"x10" on smooth bristle...medium - Graphitint/port...it has a slight hint of rose. I wanted the multilayered petals to have depth...it's more about the contrast than the colour. This is as it sits on my drawing board.

Art in the Park - What a fabulous day!

Hello dear artsies, I hope you are all full of inspiration these days.

I had the opportunity to participate in my first outdoor event, Art in the Park in Richmond. The newly formed Art Group had decided on this outdoor event as it coincided with a quilt display and the Annual Chicken BBQ put on by the Volunteer Fire Fighters...we couldn't have ordered a better day.

I was a little apprehensive as the weather can be quite destructive when it comes to paper, it's a challenge we artists face when confronting the outdoors but the sun was shining so I thought I would give it a go. I borrowed a tent from art friends Coralee and Les Bartley, tie wrapped the tent poles to my grids (thanks Steve) in hopes of not becoming a sail. At times it was gusty, a few framed pieces took a tumble but were no worse for wear and I enjoyed my day immensely, a great first.

It does require a bit more time for setup/take down but it's a lovely way to spend a day...and I always meet the nicest people.

Great local Show this Sunday - Uniquely Goulbourn Spring Show and Sale

Good morning my art buddies, hope life is treating you well these days.

I want to let you know about a fabulous spring art show coming up this Sunday May 29th, 2011 from 1-4pm at the Goulbourn Museum.

I've been involved with the Goulbourn Museum for quite a few years now, it's a wonderful little place where they preserve and share local history.

A few years ago we thought it would be a great idea to host an Art and Crafts show to showcase local artists and expose new people to what the museum is all about...it has proven to be an awesome partnership.

This year we have seven artists exhibiting their work and to me an artist is someone who has a vision and then put their hands to it to create their vision.

Keeping inspired...and active.

A dear friend, Wendy of Dragonfly Dreams, asked me a while back if I would like to participate in a pages swap she was organizing...well why not, I haven't been involved in one of these before I thought, sounds like a good idea. So I jumped in...feet first.

I love to get involved in new adventures but I often forget that in order to do a fabulous job it requires time, something I don't always have. This was something different though, I wanted very much to try this challenge. I knew it would be a great way to inspire my creativity, a nice diversion from my norm and if you find yourself stuck, a great way to jump start your block.

So a pages swap you say. A brief description...you make as many pages as there are people participating (in our case we have 10), a specific size is chosen as is a theme...our theme was Black and White. When complete we will exchange pages and I will have ten unique pages to include in a book or what ever you choose to do with them...so fun! :)

I pondered my pages, unsure of how I would proceed but slowly they revealed themselves to me in my subconscious then one sleepless night I mentally constructed my layout, chose my materials and decided on what drawing I would include...I love when that happens.

I would definitely recommend this exercise to anyone who is having difficulty with their creativity. I'm a firm believer in 'themes', often times it's the idea that is the hard part.

I Wear Many Hats

As I buzz around my studio printing this, packaging for my next show it occurred to me that I have learned many jobs since I first began this journey to becoming an 'Artist'.

I had heard a designer speak about his creations on a local TV segment a while back and said his work was 20% designing and 80% business...this resonated with me, he was so right.

When I first decided that yes it was a good idea to put myself out there and sell my wears I had no idea how many things I would learn along the way. I am not only the main component of what I sell but I also have become marketer, spokes person and girl Friday...extraordinaire of course.

I have become very adept in creating booth displays (well, what works for me) and branding and again what works best for me though I have found that to be an ever evolving concept.

I have needed to spend many hours with my computer and Nikon...Photoshop, is the big one, I've learned about social media though that is a vast and every changing entity..Twitter, Blogspot, Flickr, Facebook and Etsy have become my dear friends.

I've learned about printing with my new Epson, researching paper, and ink and finding where I can get he best prices. I've learned about having copies made at a reproduction house and dealing with professional printers

And I've only scratched the surface...then there is my office duties, searching for shows, organizing an art show, purchasing new supplies, keeping in touch with old clients and making new alliances and thinking of new ways to promote my awesomeness...you know I'm exhausted thinking about it...but what about the art? Oh ya lets get some new drawings in there too and experiment with new techniques and materials.

But you know I wouldn't have it any other way, I only answer to me and I am my best supporter.

You know the next time someone says to you 'Must be nice to stay home and draw all day' you can say 'yes it is' knowing that they have no idea of what it takes to be an 'Artist'...you don't know what it is like to walk in another person's shoes until you do.

We wear many hats but you know hats are fun and it's never boring being me.

So hello again my art loving friends, I hope you've been creating feverishly.

As you know I've been waiting patiently for my new pencils that I won from Derwent about a month ago...well not so patient, I'm like a kid at Christmas when it comes to art supplies. They have arrived all sharpened and ready to go! And I'm soooooo excited!

Look at these beauties, it's almost a shame to disturb this fabulous little nest but no worries, I will, I just have to decide what will be my inaugural masterpiece. So many possibilities...I never have a problem with ideas it's which one to choose to do first. I always have ideas swirling around my right brain, so much so it wakes me up at night...I guess I am in my right mind after all.

I hope you have new art supplies in your near future, sometimes we just have make them happen for ourselves. A trip to the art store is always time well wasted to me, it's like my honey going to Canadian Tire.

Enjoy your Saturday..the sun is shining here, that's always a good start.

It's All About Participation

Hi there art lovers, hope you are enjoying yourselves lately I know I have been.

In my last post I showed you my latest graphite drawing and my discovery of new coloured Graphitint pencils by Derwent. I was so excited with the results of my 'Converse with Me' drawing that I was searching around the Derwent website to find out what else I might do with these pencils. Lo and behold I found a drawing competition that they sponsored and encouraged people to submit their drawings with a little info. As it was the last day to submit my drawing I hurriedly filled in everything I needed and sent my little drawing away.

Two days later I sat drinking coffee checking my e-mail (pretty much my early morning routine) I found an e-mail from Derwent that said I had won their competition. Being the skeptic I am I thought it was junk mail but proceeded to open it and read and re-read...I had won...I was so excited! It's sure a nice way to start your day.

So I guess what I'm trying to convey is that as artists we shouldn't be afraid of rejection or criticism, it goes with the territory, you just never know what may happen...you can't win if you don't play right. Take some chances, you have nothing to loose and everything to gain and you meet the nicest people along the way...I sure have.

Derwent Graphitint Pencils - Lovely muted colour tones

Hello Artsies, I'm so glad you had a minute to pop by. I've been trying out some new pencils and I have to tell you I love, love, love them.

I am fascinated by the tones that graphite can give my drawings...the contrast between the light and negative spaces but as an artist I'm always looking for that next thing to try, that new material to give my drawings a fresh and interesting edge.

I work with both graphite and coloured pencils enjoying what both have to offer me in terms of versatility and finish but to have both in one well that's just awesome.

For my first attempt using these Graphitints I am pleasantly pleased with the results. I was looking for a way to incorporate subtle colour into my graphite drawings and I have found it...this is me smiling. They are the equivalent to a 4B pencil so the range from light to dark that I can achieve suits my needs perfectly.

Another unique feature about these pencils is that they are water soluble, so if you are looking for a more intense hue just by adding water will make the colour pop. Though that's not my cup of tea I can see how great they would be...hmmm...ideas are formulating.

As with my 'Easton Skate' graphite drawing I see a pattern emerging...I think I have a thing for laces. I find them so intriguing, their twists, turns and texture...I see more of these in the future.

Do you have a favourite pair of shoes...ballet, child's first pair, a vintage pair of boots? I can turn these into a treasured keepsake by turning them into a drawing...a nice gift for yourself or someone special.

Time to go, another drawing awaits and I am so excited to get started.

Picking up the pace - Challenge yourself

Welcome artsies...so glad you popped by to see what I'm up to.

This is the time of year I concentrate on developing new drawings and designs. I have time, for a few months, to focus on 'the ART' it self and not worry about all the business stuff...well, as much as I can.

Have you noticed how the days are getting a little longer, the sun a tiny bit warmer? It gets me thinking of sunny days to come and spring flowers...I so look forward to having more colour surrounding me.

The drawing above is my preliminary attempt...how I first envisioned this design. It takes me a few tries until I am completely satisfied with the colours I have chosen. I find it very exciting to see the colours come alive as I put them down on paper and as soon as I'm done I have a whole new palette I want to try.

I have so many new ideas I need to get down on paper so I am challenging myself to a drawing a week...you have to set realistic goals or you are just setting yourself up for failure...I know this will work for me.

This one isn't finished yet, many more attempts to happen before I let it rest but that's where the fun is.

Identify Yourself

It's important, as an artist, to make yourself standout from the rest. To give people a little more so you stay in their minds...sometimes easier said than done but I've concluded 'every little bit helps'.

When I do shows I always seem to run out of business cards, people like business cards. I'm not sure what they do with them...? I try to make my cards stand out a little so people will remember me. You know nice stock, colourful graphics but I was thinking I'd like to make them more of a gift as well...something that the person can use instead of throwing in a drawer.

What to do, what to do...I racked my brain over this then I remembered an article I read a while back about an artist who last minute realized she had no business cards for a show and stamped her info on shipping tags...I liked this idea.

It's a lot of fun designing something that promotes your assets...who better to do it than the person who knows what you do best...you! This gave me a chance to play. I hauled out my inks and stamps ,a nice change from my pencils. I love the look on my clients faces when I hand them a bookmark and a lovely bag for their purchases (something I make by hand) it's those little personal touches that I appreciate so I like to pass that on to my art friends.

So Far So Good

Hello bloggies, how goes your battle? We keep forging ahead don't we...

I've been working on a preliminary drawing to figure out all the issues before I put it down in colour pencil though I can say I like it in black and white too...all the tones...awesome. It is loosely based on a kind of exemplar of sorts but focusing more on the fact that these are vintage typewriter keys and not the lettering itself.

If you're wondering...Exemplar: By definition is a 'copy of a book or text.'

I have an idea (and I can see it in my mind) that this is going to look fabulous in colour...I cannot wait until I can get to it...browns, silver...antique like.

So the new Derwent graphite pencils have been wonderful to work with and me being a true Faber Castell gal I was surprised to see that I would be impressed but alas I am. They are smooth and I can achieve fantastic dark elements with a range from F to 9B...truly that's what we ultimately are seeking.

Do Something Relaxing

Hi Bleeps...welcome to my little bit of paradise. It's Saturday...are you playing today?

I spent the better part of yesterday experimenting with creating some backgrounds for a few drawings I'm developing. I have these ideas swirling around my brain so I have found the best way to set myself free is to set them down on paper.

I find this so relaxing, the repetitive pattern, I love to shade. To choose a few colours that compliment each other (not necessarily complimentary colours though) they could be variations on the same hue...or not, what ever I'm feeling at that particular moment. It's not about the finished product anymore it's about being creative...exploring. If you find it difficult then you're on the right track.

In the photo above I've been shading swirls...appropriate considering ideas have been 'swirling' around lately. I'm not sure what I'm using this for, I think I'm just trying out new ideas. This would make a lovely background though ...yes. I've been using verithins for this particular experiment because of the control I have on the course paper. The base colour is soft pink the next shade is greyed lavender.

You just never know what works until you actually try it.

Art is creating...creating is Art.

Derwent Graphic Soft - Today...smoothness

Hello dear artsies...

I had a chance to experiment a little with these pencils over the weekend and I've got to tell you I was impressed. They have a wonderful smooth flow to them on many different surfaces and also are very comfortable to hold for long periods of time...very important to someone like me.

I'm also a person who loves cases and containers to keep things organized and protected. There is nothing worse to me than dropping pencils to later find them impossible to sharpen due to broken graphite inside...we all have our pet peeves.

I think these pencils will be a great addition to my tool box and I look forward to putting them to use in my next drawing.

Derwent Graphic drawing pencils - Today...overall appearance.

I recently purchased a set of Derwent graphic pencils - H to 9B - 12 pencils for drawing. Now I have to tell you that I have been a Faber Castell gal for a good many years and have achieved fabulous results with said pencils but I had an opportunity for a 'half price' deal so I jumped at the chance to do a little comparing.

When I was going to Art School my drawing teacher (Mrs. Pinkus) introduced us to the knife method of sharpening pencils, this is not my preferred way to sharpen - I like a nice fine point for detail though it works well for shading larger areas. Which brings me to my point (ha ha) it is difficult and sometimes frustrating to sharpen a pencil, to find that the graphite is not centred in the wood, you would hope that being 'drawing' pencils the manufacturer would have this figured out by now.

So back to the Derwent. I was pleased with all the pencils save one, the F, the wood appeared to be longer on one side which leads me to believe that the lead is not centred This is, I have found, to be in the long run a waste as you end up over sharpening to get at the graphite. I'm not sure how much I will use this pencil, I tend to stay away from the harder pencils as they often make impressions in the paper, not very attractive when you attempt to go back in to do a bit of shading.

Tomorrow I will discuss the over all feel or smoothness of the pencils (I have this thing about 'dry drag' on paper, gives me the shivers)

It's always time well wasted to try new materials, you just never know when you will find that 'perfect fit'.

Have you chosen your 'word' for 2011?

Good morning dear friends, hope you are recuperating from all your holiday celebrations.

As an artist I have found it very helpful to visualize where I want to be in my career. In 2010 I chose the word 'Success' which gave me something to focus on...work towards. I painted a canvas which had a large 'S' to represent my goal, I could reflect upon it to bring me back to where I wanted to be...it worked as a vision board of sorts when I found myself floundering.

Now with 2011 only two days away I had to put on my thinking cap and figure out what was to be my direction. I found a quiet moment where I could put my thoughts in perspective...figure out where I want to go and it just literally popped into my mind. I kept saying it over in all my thoughts...have I kept you in suspense long enough? My word for 2011 is 'OPEN'.

I want to 'open' up possibilities, 'open' doors, be 'open' to what ever comes along, 'open' my mind to new ideas.

What's your word for 2011?

Sweet Face - a new graphite drawing

I've been working very hard for what seems like quite a while now...it keeps me out of trouble. Prepping canvases, packaging cards and creating new drawings like this one. I've been thinking about this one for a while then after speaking with patron a couple of weeks back at a show about a friend she had that passed away and how he loved chickadees...well it spurred me into action.

I can't tell you how many hours it took me but off and on (as I like to work a bit, put it away, pick it up and so on) it was completed in two weeks. When I'm passionate about a drawing I can't seem to leave it alone.

The chickadees like to sit in our lilac tree just outside the backdoor as they wait their turn at the bird feeder. They have got to be the cutest little guys.

A Few New Things

Hello, so glad you stopped in to see me, never dull around here, I can tell you.

I have an art show tomorrow at the Goulbourn Museum so I spent the better part of today preparing for that and talking to rabbit asking her opinion. She's pretty quiet though, I heard a funny line a while back on Big Bang Theory...'Rabbits always look like they're about to say something but never do'. I am getting better at packing up (you think I would be great at it by now) but every show is slightly different and I like to make sure I have the proper stock related to that clientele. You know is it a young show, the area and association that it is involved with, the time of year...what will people be looking for in terms of gifts. All good questions when asking yourself 'Well, what should I bring for today?'

No one was home so I moved a bunch of my work upstairs to the kitchen, it's bright and sunny - the hub of the home...and I could watch TV while I worked (I like the company). I prepped some cradle board and canvases so I could mount my drawings...just an alternative way to offer my work.

Have fun with whatever you do, enjoy you work and play, take pride in what you accomplish for yourself, no one else...do it for you. I hope to see you tomorrow.

A New Drawing to Share

Hey there, what have you been up too? It's Friday and I've completed my drawing this week...yeah!

I have a show coming up this September in Almonte which has been a good motivator for me to get me immersed in my work figuring out what I want to have available for the people who visit my booth. As I mentioned the other day I like to have a few new pieces created for my regulars as they give me suggestions and I try to produce a few of them.

The show is called Fibrefest which I take a bit of ribbing about as some friends confuse it with a show for seniors. It's all about textiles...wool, material etc. for knitters, quilters, weavers so that's where I've included in my body of work drawings of related objects...this is an vintage pin cushion.

This is a shot showing you my new drawing, what I've been working on this week...I love graphite...I love to draw especially when what I've envisioned comes to fruition. I can't wait to have these scanned and printed, I'm waiting on a shipment of mats, then I'll be busy. I look forward to seeing them in their completed form and then see how they are received when first viewed.

Where is the summer going?

Hello and welcome. I hope you've been following me over at 'How I See It' photos from my every day, that's where you'll be sure to see what I've been up to, my photos spill over into my creative life which is the life I live every day, how lucky am I.

I've been crazy busy, something I'm sure you can all relate to, the kids are home, husband is off on holidays, so many outside projects to attend to and Farmers Markets...so much fun at the markets.

Participating in a Farmers Market has kept me focused on being serious about creating and staying on top of my productivity. Meeting people at the markets has made me realize just how much I love talking with people about art...my art or art in general and without failure I always pick up interesting facts or tips about something relative to my craft.

We all need a purpose, it's what keeps us energized about life. We need to participate in our lives, we have been given this wonderful gift and should take advantage of every opportunity to fulfil our greatest potential. We all have something special to give to this delicate world of ours and if we focus on that I believe we will live a more harmonious life.

Of course it goes without saying (but I will say it anyway) that we all take on way too much but don't you find, as I do, there is just so many things I want to explore and experience. We need to learn how to be more discriminating with our time because for me it's all about the path not the destination, that's where the fun lies.

Well that's enough insight for today, I must go forth and practice what I preach...it all makes perfect sense when I see it written down, let's hope I can keep on task.

All the best to you with your search for artistic peace...keep your mind open to possibilities, that's when the universe is trying to show you what's available...it's infinite.

It's been so great taking part in the Perth Farmers Market every Saturday for the summer months, something I've never done before so I figured if I want to expand my knowledge I needed to get out there and try new things, the only draw back is it has rained every Saturday I've been there...I think it can only get better...oh the eternal optimist...it works for me. I find it working really well for me to have a goal, a time line so to speak, to keep me focused on producing my art when I know I need to have new stock ready for sale.

This is one of my newest displays for my bright and colourful 'Artful' coloured pencil drawings that I've mounted on 8x8 canvases, these are key holders (you can get a closer look on my Artful site)

I take new prints every week so as not to be the same old same old and change up my display to make it a little more interesting for the regulars who turn up week after week. Markets are such a social thing I can so understand the draw they have...it takes us back to a more simple time and I love being a part of it.

Riding the Wave of Creativity

Oh my it's been a busy spring even though our weather has been more summer like of late. We've had many a hot steamy day most of the month of May and I think it's helping my creative mind unleash all it's dreams. I have become a definite believer in the action of affirmations, when you put it out there the universe takes note and aids in making these possibilities...realities. I think when you are on the right path (where you are balanced) you are encouraged to continue by a feeling deep within you know to be true. All I can describe it as is an excitement, that feeling you used to get as a child when you couldn't wait to get up Christmas morning, a feeling of deep peace that makes you smile for no reason.

I have been writing much more these days (not something I would have pictured me doing if you were to ask me a year ago) with my photo blog, an artistic column for a local website that promotes artists etc. Ottawa Valley Showcase and this art site. Writing like drawing is very draining I find, you pull it from deep within. I have learned so much though and I find the people are liking what I'm writing, go figure, so I will continue to expand my horizons...I'm having so much fun. Jump on board and try something that is totally foreign to you, you will learn a lot about what you are truly capable of.

Printing for a Show

It's an interesting process for me getting ready for an Art Show, what do you take, how much space do I have, what is my clientele going to be...and so on. I tend to stress a little gearing up to the event but I try to use this to my advantage, it gives me the energy I need to get organized.

I have found after doing many shows that I need to tailor my stock to the theme or emotion of the event. That being said never compromise your true self, stay on your passionate path, what it is you love. For instance; I have done Fibre Art Shows so I take more drawings related to that subject, quilts, pincushions, ball of wool with needles. If they are spring shows I take flower drawings (Munster Sunflower) fall shows I take hockey drawing (Easton skates) you get what I'm inferring.

Offer different levels of your work so anyone can purchase and enjoy the beauty you have worked so hard to share. Prints (16x20, 11x14, 8x10, 5x7) Cards, mention that these can be framed as well, when you send a card you are sending a present as the handwritten letter is becoming more scarce. Interact on a personal level with your admirers, I feel that when they stop they are telling you that they would like to get to know you a little better.

Just a few rocks

I haven't forgot about you guys but I have to tell you I've been very busy with my photography and my drawings. There just doesn't seem to be enough time in a day to get it all done, I know it's the same for you too right? I've also be trying to re-organize my studio so that it functions a little smoother, I've concluded I have too much stuff, think I will donate it to a women's home or a youth group, do you have an ideas on this?

This is a drawing I've been working on for a little while, coloured pencil takes much longer than graphite but oh so rewarding. Choosing the palette is so much fun, I find it funny how these choices change depending on the mood I'm in and the time of year (lighting is different).

This is a different view for me, I've done rocks before but not as the subject. In my 'Swallowtail' graphite drawing the background gravel was more abstract. Now with these smooth shore stones I wanted you to be able to feel the texture, so to speak, with your eyes.

I'll try to get back more frequently...wish me luck with getting the studio organized.

New Skate Drawing as promised

Well I've finished it and as promised here is the first showing. This is the first in a series of 'laces' drawings I'll be doing as I love the detail in the criss crossing. I used a photo that I took a few weeks ago for my Project 365, if you would like to see it's here on my photo blog. I'm going to keep these to a manageable size, 9inches by 7inches, very portable and easy to reproduce.

I chose a slightly different paper for this drawing, Strathmore smooth stock for pencil or pen and ink. My pencils are Castell 9000 graphite by A.W. Fabre 2B, 4B, 6B and a 6H for very fine detail. I have an electric eraser as it spins, a larger pen type and also a regular white and of course my ever trusty goats hair brush.

I love to organize my stuff

I've often said that if you have the right tools it makes your life a whole lot easier, that's what these drawers do for me (among other tools I have mentioned in previous posts). I love to organize things, always have, and when things are in order I feel I can direct my attention to the task at hand. It grounds me, centres my soul so I can concentrate totally on what I'm trying to accomplish. Drawing for me requires a great deal of energy and after a days work I am spent, it drains me but I suppose that's the way it should be I am putting my heart and soul into each piece I create.

I don't often sell my originals unless they were commissioned. It's like I have given birth to each new creation and I have a difficult time letting them go, not knowing what will become of them. I know it sounds silly but I get very attached to my precious progeny. You can usually tell when an Artist has put a great deal of him/herself into a piece, you can see the love.

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder...true but also think beauty is in the hand of it's creator as well.

Today Jaimie Ridler Studios asks 'What do you wish to awaken?'

I think I have been on this path for a while now so I have awakened it already...my Artistic desire but it always needs nurturing.

I have awakened my spiritual centre which has grounded me in more ways than I can name...it has been a true guide for my life and how I wish to live.

I do wish to awaken passion in my children. Through example I hope they see how truly happy and fulfilled one can be when you are pursuing your hearts true path, and I believe we all have a path we must follow. It may not be the path you have imagined but it is necessary to your development.

Life is a path and we are here to learn, to grow.

Inspired by Kelly Rae Roberts

'Show the world your creativity'

A little while ago I purchased a book (a book Wendy told me about) by Kelly Rae Roberts, Taking Flight. I was so taken with her beautiful colours, charming faces and calming inspiration that I could hardly put it down.

Now being a pencil artist this type of painting is way out there for me. I work with a very controlled medium where I can bring to life the most minute detail, something that I absolutely love so letting go and exploring was very foreign. Wendy and I jumped in.

I wanted to try all of Kelly Rae's techniques, to try them on so to speak, and see what appealed to me. The above painting is taken from her book (page 55) but with a twist, I painted the heroine in my image. I wanted this as a reminder to myself that it's good to try new things, it makes you grow and reach.

It says 'I declare my intention to become true to me' Thanks Kelly Rae for your inspiration, I was able to stretch my wings a little.

Wish Casting Wednesday - What do you wish for your family?

What do you wish for your family?

This is a prayer I make everyday for my family - I wish them health, happiness and safety.

At night when all is quiet and my boys (and honey) are all tucked in safe and sound I pray for them. I suppose it could be considered a wish, depending on your beliefs, but for me it is a prayer and I know that the universe is listening.

Open your hearts and believe in the power of wishes.

Favourite Tools

Have you ever found a tool that just makes your life a little easier? That's my goats hair brush. I know these are meant for painting but it is the best brush I've found to keep my drawings free from debris. They are soft and inexpensive so make a great addition to any art tool box (mine is my little blue Art Bin I've had since Art School)

They come in many sizes and are washable so once they've become soiled wash them gently with some brush cleaner and preserver or saddle soap, both protect the bristles.

I have a few different brushes around, one for graphite, one for coloured pencils in a couple of sizes depending on the size of the drawing.

My new plan for 2010 is to be diligent in regards to working on my Art. I want to put a good effort forward because I truly believe you reep what you sow

So I suppose I wish to shine with my Art by working honestly and truly and the rest will follow.

I wish to shine by setting a good example for my children so they know that you can work hard but you also need to ensure you're keeping balance in your life...spending time with the ones you love.

Wow this one really stumped me...I had to ponder for a while to find my answer. I figured out the reason for my road block fairly quickly though...the difficulty lies with the fact I have many dreams I need to explore.

I use the word need instead of wish as I have so many dreams swimming around my mind that they consume a lot of my thoughts...I need to explore them to satisfy my curiosity and to put my mind at rest.

The Biggest dream I wish to explore is to trust my intuition that just because it makes me happy doesn't mean it's not work.

Trust yourself, you know deep down what's best for you.

PS I got a new camera so you're going to see photos here for a while, I need to explore my camera.

Breakfast Anyone

This little guy showed up this morning for breakfast, I can't believe how cute he is but he really didn't like me watching him (all be it through the screen and door) eat his meal. After this shot he decided he would sit in the bucket of corn so he wasn't disturbed any further.

So the Nikon won out over Canon (just a personal preference) I was already familiar with Nikon and all their controls so there wasn't a big learning curve for me but now I'm addicted to my camera even more (I am a spoiled girl, thanks Honey Bun).

I hope more of God's creatures show up at my door, I'll be waiting.

That's pretty easy for me, I wish for the health of my family and I wish for prosperity in my Art. I think these are pretty standard as far as wishes go but sometimes the most simple is the most obvious.

I think our lives are complicated enough we need to 'SIMPLIFY' and in doing so we find 'PEACE'. With Peace our lives improve and so follows our health. If you have your health you are truly blessed.

Prosperity for me comes from having a clear mind so I am able to focus on what I need to accomplish.

Make 2010 a year of clearing out the old to make room for the magnificent.

A Question - Nikon or Canon?

I'm having a little dilema, I'm in need of a new camera and having trouble deciding what to buy. I've narrowed it down to a Nikon or Canon. I've had a Nikon for the past 6 years but wondering now if it's time for a change. There are so many to choose from with so many wonderful features.

I love taking photos, it's a part of my creative process as I work out a lot of my compostion and lighting using my camera so I need to resolve this as soon as I can.

Maybe you can give me some advice on what camera you use and why you like it, all input would be greatly appreciated.

I know this may sound corny but I wish for Peace on Earth. I wish that all people know comfort and joy. It's pretty simple but seems to be something that we just can't seem to achieve.

Though I think if we keep trying to spread the message and practice what we preach there is still hope and as long as we have hope there is a chance.

And if we heed the message that John and Paul put forth many years ago 'Give Peace a Chance' we might be successful.

Holiday Cheer

It's been such a busy time around here right now, oh my, hockey tournaments, anniversary dinner, combining corn (crazy time of year to do that) and then all the regular preparations baking, shopping, wrapping...eating. I know what one of my New Years resolutions will be...get back on a healthy eating track but you know it's all part of Christmas for me.

My guys are outside trying to get the tractor started, it's not co-operating this morning but it was a little cold, -19C ( that's -2F for my American friends) but the sun is shinning so...oh I hear it now, hopefully they can finish up the combining today.

The ceramic jar above was one we found on our property where the old homestead stood. I love to think about who might have used it in their kitchen, where it sat and what was in it...it has a history and I love that.

Antiques are simple and seem to have a soul. If we can live our lives 'simply' we have achieved a great deal, it keeps a perspective that we desperately need to keep.

Keep things simple, and you'll find your life will fall into step.

What do I wish to give? Think, think...

I think what I wish to give is my time. It's all about balance, knowing when to call it quits with work and spend time with the ones that mean the most to us. Time for my children, to connected to what's going on in their lives. Time for my husband to keep our relationship growing. Time for my aging in-laws, who need us a little more each day. Time for my friends to share artists ideas and camaraderie. Time for my community that we need to nurture and embrace.

I think when you give of yourself truly and freely you will receive it back ten fold...and I do. At the end of the day I want to feel that I've done my best to reach the people I love.

Give of yourself, it will free you beyond belief.

A Little More Winter Wonderland

I wanted to share another wintry photo. We had another flurry of snow over night which is really starting to accumulate, it's lovely to look at but not so nice to shovel. My little reindeer are all but buried out front, all you can see is their lights glowing under a mound of white fluff, guess I'll have to form a search party and rescue them.

You can see little tracks here and there, I imagine the mice are running underneath, making roadways this way and that, a great way to hide. The deer have passed by on their way to the cedar bush out back for shelter.

I miss the days when the offspring would beg for me to put on my snow pants, go outside and build a snow fort or take them sliding...maybe I can talk them into it when they get home from school, I think they'll be game, we all should take time to play.

Beauty of the Season

I am so in awe of our scenery right now, it is absolutely beautiful and even though I don't like driving in it the snow is the most wonderful thing I can imagine. It's like covering you with a blanket that warms your heart with the feelings of Christmas. Things are so much brighter with this perfect white downy duvet.

The smell of a wood fire burning in the shed, warming it's frosty contents, brings memories of hauling sleighs of logs, with the boys in tow, to the house and wet boots down the stairs to the big black, sooty wood stove waiting, mouth wide, for more fuel. It's such a comfort to remember these details (which at the time just seems like a lot of work) that I now can miss those simpler days.

Hope you all are enjoying your scenery and remember during the busy days ahead that we only need to look to find beauty.

Jaimie Ridler Studios asks us this Wish Casting Wednesday, What is your spirit wishing for? After great thought and reflection I concluded that the thing my spirit is crying out for (loudly I might say) is recognition and validation.

As Jamie says we tend to take on roles that we think others would approve and once we have fulfilled all those duties I think only then we let ourselves reach for what we truly feel deep down is the true essence of ourselves.

I love being an artist and how I feel when I'm engaged in that dream, it is my true self, where I feel the most like who I am suppose to be.

So my wish this week is for my Art to be noticed and to take that next BIG step towards success. I also wish great success for all of you who are searching for the spirit within.

The Snow's a comin'

We're preparing for our first storm of the winter coming tomorrow. We have been very lucky here in the Valley as we've had no snow to speak of so driving has been wonderful and safe. But you know Christmas would not be the same without a dusting of the fluffy white stuff ( at least not for me).

I remember back in 1971 when the snow was piled so high we could slide off our garage roof and we built the most awesome snow forts you could imagine. We don't seem to get that anymore but I don't know if I beleive totally in global warming, I think in part that climates shift and we are heading that way.

So as our weather changes here in the Great White North slow down, stay safe and be warm, Hug a friend today.

Here is my set up for the Alcatel-Lucent Christmas Gift Show, this was a new one for me - a two day event in which the clientele come to peruse our wares over their lunch hour.

What a lovely building and I always meet such wonderful people (vendors and shoppers) at the shows that I do. This is where I can talk 'Art' for a couple of hours to who ever will listen... love it. People have beautiful comments and questions and I always learn so much.

It's so interesting to me to see how creative people in our own backyard are. My gal pal Wendy Southin and her Steam Punk jewelry (a new phrase for me) at Dragonfly Dreams and my new sweet friend Jenn Reid (and Mom) at Crazy Bliss with her whimsical Art. You should check them out, very cool.

Support Our Troops - Red Fridays

This is just a little something I've been working on in my spare time. I find knitting very relaxing so while I drink my tea after supper I pick up something I have on the go (and I always have something on the go) Right now I have this scarf, a bag and another finer scarf in progress. It's something I can grab and take with me while I'm waiting at appointments or I need to wind down.

This one I made with 'Support Our Troops' in mind. We do wear red on Fridays here to show our support of our troops and I guess this is something small I can do to show them that we are thinking of them and Thanks.

It's a great thing they do.

What step do I wish to take? Oh what step don't I wish to take, I feel some days I'm about to burst with things I want to do.

But first and foremost I wish to expand my Art career - take a BIG GIANT STEP forward to supporting myself with my art.

I absolutely love what I do and I hope all of you have the same happiness and balance in your life. Balance is difficult but if at the end of the day when you lay your head down you can say 'Wow that was an awesome day and I did my best' you know you can sleep well.

Here is yet another of my bear designs that I painted up yesterday, I enjoy painting these little guys very much. I think it's the thought of someone receiving one of these for the Holiday Season that makes them special for me. They are bright and cheery and I hope put a smile on someone's face.

It's hard these days, it seems, to send appropriate 'seasonal cards' as we all have our own beliefs but I think we can celebrate our winter time and all that comes with it.

It's too bad you can't see the shimmer that the H2O paints give these cards, it's quite lovely.

So here I go, back at it and loving every minute of it. Have a very beary lovely day.

Just another card I wanted to share with you that I've been working on for Christmas. I designed this bear a few years ago, along with the snowbuddies, but didn't do much with them. They are a lot of fun to create, I draw them with a black Sakura Micron Pigma pen and then hand paint them with Twinkling H2O watercolour paints. There will be more to come so keep checking in at the Shoppe.

Well I must get back to work...create, create, create...Wonderful.

A Well Deserved Break

I've been working pretty hard these last few weeks, you know this is a busy time for a lot of us. I'm doing a lot of shows, teaching classes, keeping track of things at shops I have my prints at, finding new venues and My Etsy Shoppe and all that entails.

Some say 'Oh well, you've got it easy, you work from home'. Granted I am doing something I absolutley love and I thank the Lord everyday but I also work very hard and would never change it for anything. We artists have to work 3 times as hard as most to acheive greatness but when you believe in yourself (and we all have our moments of doubt) you forge ahead because you know deep down that this is the path that has been laid out for you.

Follow your path, you know you're only happy when you're there in the middle of it all, knee deep in frustration and balance but remember it's the journey we're on that's important and I've met so many wonderful flowers along my path.

5. I was born on my paternal Grandmother's birthday and my maternal Grandfather's birthday.

Getting to know someone is a strange and wonderous thing, we are social creatures yet are apprehensive to open up and let people in, become vulnerable. You know it's worth while taking the time to listen to the soul sing, this song is the true essence of a person...you can hear it if you open your heart and are willing to trust.

Snow Buddy

I've been playing with a different medium these days (it's good to change it up every now and then) I love to send handmade cards at Christmas to family and friends so this is one of this years card set.

(you can find these at my Etsy Shoppe).

I draw the image with a Sakura Micron Pigma black pen then hand colour with Twinkling H2O Luminarte watercolour paints. These paints are awesome as they give a little subtle shimmer to your Art work (a perfect effect for these cards) I use 140lb coldpress watercolour paper as I wanted a good weight.

I know there's a big push to 'save trees' and so on and I support the 3R's totally but it sure is nice to recieve a hand written card that you know someone has taken the time to pick for you, write in it and send. It's about taking time to appreciate one another, letting your lovelies know they mean a great deal to you.

People are gone too quickly from our lives, let them know you're thinking of them.

Wow, what do I wish to dare? It can be very scary to dare. I did dare to open my Etsy Shoppe two weeks ago, it felt really good to accomplish things I've put on my 'list'

I dare to not be intimidated to ask shops to host my drawings - not to fear rejection. That's a big one for me and for a lot of artists I think.

I dare to think BIGGER for my Art career, learn how to trust my instincts.

I keep a list in my art journal of things I want & need to accomplish. It is extremely satisfying and empowering to physically cross that deed off said list. I think when you put it down in writing it holds you more accountable, you've made it official and it's a reminder of what is important to you.

You could start your 'list' today, believe me you'll feel good that you did.

Palette Swatches

Sometimes it's a little hard to get going, especially on a Monday (hazelnut/vanilla coffee helps) Here are a few things that work for me and I hope they'll work for you, it's worth a try.

I recently, and that is relative, bought some new LuminArte watercolour paints (they are so cute in their little pots) and decided it was time to start to explore. Making swatches of paint groupings is a great way to stimulate your passion, you learn a little about their properties and intensity. Unlike standard watercolours these paints have a subtle shimmer to them which add a unique 'glow'. I use these swatches for later works to decide on shades I think will work for a particular piece. Just applying the colour and watching the hues illuminate fuels the creative flow.

Another good exercise is making gradient swatches, starting with intense colour then gradually add more water to each application. I keep the swatches in a reference journal which is also helpful when you decide to purchase more, which is inevitable.

Do you remember getting new watercolour paint tins as a kid? I just couldn't wait to get my brush into them to see what they could do. Use that same innocence. Explore today like a child, it's good for the soul and a lot of fun.

These Boots

Starting a new project well I equate that to buying new boots, a totally exhilarating experience. I imagine it's like hunting. You head out to known areas where they've been spotted, do a little tracking, look at the different species available then make your kill. A new project has that same energy, it's the process that's the most fun for me. Picking paper then size, choosing a medium then palette, a subject then mood...Oooooooo!

Never let anyone tell you what you do isn't important. You're making something beautiful to add to the beauty of our existence...it's what's important to you that matters.

(I am thankful today for my gal pals, they understand the real me) I hope you have that in your life...I wish it for you.

I've just discovered Jamie Ridler Studios (thanks Laura Daub) and I like her thinking. There's a lot we haven't discovered yet about ourselves, she makes us think in the right direction.

My Wish for myself...well where do I start? This week my wish will be I would love new success with my Art (recognition and prosperity)

We all work so hard to find our way in the world, a little help now and then would sure be a wondrous thing. I know I'm surrounded by love, I can feel it across my shoulders, like a big hug, a low voice telling me 'you're on the right track'. To see it all come to fruition...it's the one goal that seems just out of reach.

Make BIG wishes for yourself...the universe is listening...always.

Winged Lovelies

I'm always looking for new art forms to try, this was one I found a few years ago - Scherenschnitte is the Art of intricate cut paper. Many people cut the paper with small sewing scissors and such but I found an x-acto knife is more easily controled and works best for me. It's actually a lot of fun (but then again I absolutly love detail) cutting out shapes then revealing an intricate image that resembles lace. Many of these are designs are meant for framing but I love to put them on a shade, illuminating them brings in a whole new dimension.

Whenever you try a new technique of any kind it's only beneficial to you as an Artist, you learn new ways to incorporate it into your own work and to give said work a new life. You've got to keep trying on different hats, odd ones, tall ones even hats that are a little strange, that's the only way you'll know which one fits you. Tell me, which hat do you like?

Don't you find that on these dull, rain filled, autumnal days having something a little 'cool' makes you feel just a tad brighter? It does me. (I knit this a while ago) I have a thing for bags, it must be a girl thing or at the very least a past life obsession from my vagabond days with the gypsies. My paternal grandmother was Mary McGillicuddy (my middle namesake) From my understanding the McGillicuddy's were a large Irish clan (back in the Medieval day) thus my meandering ways were formed. My Great Grand Father, Jerimiah McGillicuddy, was a musician, he travelled with a band playing fiddle to who ever would listen, my Aunty Ag was a painter, a wonderful, beautiful woman, my cousin an actor, artistic roots run deep for me. Find your passion, it may manifest in many forms, I know mine has. I've been creating all my life and I would not have it any other way. Open up to all possibilities.

I just love this shot, I'm going to use it for a drawing soon, I have so many swimming around my mind. I was under the impression that this was a '53 Chevy but was informed that it is actually a '54, a very important stat to an aficionado (thanks Steve). What a beautiful metal sculpture just sitting patiently for years awaiting someone to find and appreciate it's curves and slightly dulled red paint. I think she's absolutely gorgeous don't you? There are so many faces out there (her's is a little toothy but bright just the same) wanting to be found and appreciated. I think I'll call her Annabelle.

On the wing of a prayer

Insects, and in particular dragonflies, facinate me with the delicate and intricate design of their beauty. How wonderful are all their strange little bodies and remarkable detail of their lace like wings. On one particular day, as I admired the warm summer sun, I noticed there were 21 of these 'little lovelies' sitting on my clothes line. I pondered for a moment, wondering what were they doing there sitting on my line then realized that (in my mind) they were just visiting one another and me. What a sight, I sat and marveled for quite some time at this unique event. Does this happen often? Not sure but I consider myself fortunate to have witnessed this and it gives me a warm comfort to think I was stopping life long enough to notice. We seem to spend so much time racing that we miss the race. Take notice of 'little lovelies', they'll stop to say hi.

The artistic process... hummm never thought much about it, didn't realize I had a system but in retrospect I guess I do, it's becoming more clear or maybe I'm just listening better. The ideas seem to manifest while I'll sleep, develope in the shower, and as long as I get them down on paper before breakfast it's a good day. whenever you use that side of the brain anything is possible knitting, writing, drawing whatever your thing, it's all good. Like this shawl the idea came to me and I just couldn't wait to see it finished. With all aspects of creating there are usually detours but that's what's so fun...the process.

Run With The Wind

Oldest offspring participated in the 'Rattle Me Bones' 5k run for the Ottawa Hospital Sunday with a couple of thousand other inspiring trodders. I realized, while standing at the finish line awaiting said shinning light, that we all have our paths that we are plodding along. Some with steadfast determination and focus to get to that proverbial end and others enjoying every single well laid stride along their journey. We all need to have an plan or path, it gives us focus and reason to reach for our stars, but it's how you choose to 'finish' that's important. Both are a means to an end, which one are you on? I'm taking my time, I don't want to miss a single moment. Love everything about your life.

Creativity

CREATIVITY! It presents itself in many ways and can be interpreted in many more. I've seen it in the unusual design of a building, the careful curve of a beautiful boot and in nature (though this is a divine element, none the less it is creativity at it's best). Someone has seen something in their minds eye and followed through to have it realized. That is truly awesome. We are all creative in some form be it cooking an enticing meal for our lovelies, arranging a room in such a way that is esthetically perfection, it is there in all of us. We need to LOOK carefully at the beauty around us. On a lonely afternoon, take your camera and go for a walk. Really look at what's 'presenting' itself to you, offering if you will. You will be amazed at what you missed but has been there all along waiting for you to discover.

Inspiration

It amazes me, and I know I've mentioned this before, how creative I get when I'm feeling under the weather. That side of the brain is more alive and I'm not sure what causes this, ideas just seem to present themselves with little or no effort on my part. I love to take photos and in particular macro photography is quite attractive to me. The detail I find just fascinating, every hair, bubble, petal and line, as in my ART, comes alive to my eye. Many of my photos sit for quite a while then in an instant an idea formulates and that 'Bee' I took last year has a new life. Doodling is a marvelous way to get creative juices flowing, I started to do this to my photos and now I have a new line of cards. I feel their energy and the words manifest. Try doodling (you probably did it as a teen) let the pen flow, you'll like what happens. Watch for my new SPRING cards.

Museum Art Show

My little corner was perfect. I love the excitement leading up to a show, the anticipation, the energy. Mind you it is a lot of work, this artistic journey I'm on, which is the most absolute fun I've ever had and I could not, would not do anything else. Sharing my Art with people who are truly interested is always a pleasant endeavor, I learn a great deal from the people I meet. As artists we spend the major portion of our days by ourselves, envisioning, creating which IS the process so to be out and about conversing with 'like minds' is definitely a necessity. We need that interaction, the feedback even if we don't realize it, we are sensitive, social creatures. Look inward to reflect but reach outward for inspiration.

A Wonderful Afternoon

Good frosty Monday morning. I had such a good time yesterday afternoon at our 'little museum' Art Show, artists are such great people...my kind of people. We chatted all afternoon, artists and lovers of, I always learn so much from my kindred souls. I find I've only just met many of these 'treasured talents' but feel I have 'known' them forever (you know what I mean). So amazing are these artists it boggles my mind how humble they all are, sharing their art and a little inspiration means so much. Thanks to all for coming...keep creating, inspiring and forge ahead.

Art Show at the Museum

We're gearing up for the 2nd annual Art Show and Sale at the Goulbourn Museum at Stanley Corners this Sunday, October 18th, from 1-4pm. It's such a jewel, our little local museum, we're enticing art lovers with an afternoon filled with many types of art and a little history to boot. Art is in the eye of the beholder, it presents itself in many forms and you never know when you'll be touched by it's beauty. I'm always amazed at the talent we have here in our own backyard and how wonderful that it comes in many different forms. It's good to make your art available in many forms, I have found my Art Friends like to be able to share art in some sort of gift. It's hard to know a person's style so they're safe in giving a small print, card, book mark or tag. Especially with Chrstmas coming, tags are very popular, I find giving something personal is what people are after. It's Apple Pickin' Time

Look at these lovely honey crisps, bought them Saturday at the Carp Farmer's market. Autumn is my favourite time of year, in case you hadn't guessed that already, I wish we could have it stay a little while longer. It`s getting slightly cooler every day but it`s bound to happen sooner or later. The sun is shining, the birds are flocking getting reading to move on and the season is changing just like most things in our lives. Our lives evolve as we grow emotionally, spiritually, and yes even physically. Like the birds go with the flow, learn how to fly, trust and soar higher than you had ever imagined.

Beautiful Market Day

We are so fortunate to have a wonderful outdoor market not far from our rural haven. Filled with local, delicious ambundance. Stands full of juicy apples, cider, squash, leeks, potatoes, fresh cranberries and oh all the baked goodness you could ever envision, fresh pecan tarts, pumpkin muffins, sun dried tomato and basil bread...amazing. This is their last weekend of the season, closing up as the cold will soon set in. What a remarkable day my gal pals and I had. We purchased produce for our anticipated family meals and experienced a genuine day. After days of rain the sun shone and warmed our dampened spirits. People were smiling to one another, sharing a kind word while chatting with new acquaintances. What a lovely life we have here.

Decorating with Colour

Bringing the outdoors in. It makes the house come alive when things seems to be putting themselves to sleep. Small centre pieces like this add warmth to a room. Candles glowing makes us feel more at ease with the day, it's quiet and fills the room with comfort. I found these paper leaves last year at a clear out, just lovely, the colours rich and sublime almost as good as pressed leaves. It's nice to have colour indoors when things are getting a little dull outdoors, an apple scented candle to top it off sitting on a vintage linen cloth brings us home. Live your life thankfully, make the most of your days with the ones you love.

A New Drawing

There's nothing like the excitement of starting a new drawing. I love to envision what is going to transpire as the drawing developes. It always surprises me how it grows slightly different than how I imagined but it never disappoints. This is going to be a little different from what I have done in past years as I'm going to combine graphite with coloured pencil. I like to work on the background images first as they 'warm me up' to get to the meat or subject of the drawing. One of my favourite tools is my hake goats hair brush which I use to 'sweep' away pencil dust and eraser bits, I keep one for graphite and a few different ones for coloured pencils. They are just lovely and an inexpensive tool to add to your art bin.

The Richness of Autumn Colour

I'm always amazed at the colours in nature, how does she do it? Yes I said she, Mother Nature, of course has to be a woman. True colour is all around us in nature, the deep richness of beets, the sunny yellow of spaghetti squash, the warm glow of pumpkin orange, ruby red apples oh my I'm getting hungry. Look to nature to inspire you, to awaken your imagination, to move you into action. I love how the season of fall makes us think of home, being with our families, appreciating our loved ones, I guess it's giving thanks for all our bounty. Take the time, slow down to be with one another and thank the powers that be.

Hug Your Neck

My world is filled with art in some form or another. I love to create and I love to learn new media. Many years ago my mom taught me to knit and sew so I can thank her in part for my love of creating. I find knitting very relaxing, it's a kind of meditiation for me. Casting on stitches, envisioning what you're going to create, anticipation of the finished product. As I knit I think of the person I'm making it for and it seems to take on a personality of it's own. When I knit I remember 'Tesia', I feel her with me, watching over me. I miss her everyday. Try knitting you may find it brings you closer to a loved one and a little meditation never hurt either.

Art Journals

Once a month a few artsy gal pals of mine get together and do a book swap. Wendy from Dragonfly Dreams created the beautiful books for our group. We get to paint, draw, stamp, sew, glue or what ever grabs us at the moment. It's a lot of fun because you never know what you're going to get. I have Maggie's this month and I used a favourite photo I took a couple of years ago when I first got my Nikon. I trimmed it, and wrote inspiring text all around, something I love. Next month someone else may paint over some of it or add to it. It`s a wonderful way to connect with like minds and spend time with friends. Start your own group today.

Love to Journal

I don't know if anyone else is burdened with this affliction, when the weather is changing (pressure wise) terrible headaches ensue. They don't come very often, thank goodness, but it sure puts a kink in production. On the upside the days following are filled with flowing inspiration, so much so I've had to start a new journal just for new drawing ideas and techniques I want to try. I normally keep a journal to store 'reminders' of things I've seen, interesting facts and feelings that pop in, funky places I want to visit, supplies I need to replace...well you know how it goes, but this new journal is growing very fast. Journaling is a wonderful, fulfilling way to remind oneself of important content but also a creative way to stir the soul awake. The more you do the easier it becomes. Challenge yourself to journal...it may surprise you.

Playing with Images

When it's rainy outside it's fun to curl up with a cozy blanket and read but I also like to play with my photos in Photo Shop. There are great 'filters' you can use to change the look of your photos. Continuing with my love of antiques I took this photo using a quilt I made and an old blue glass jar I acquired . After finding the shot I liked I put this through a filter called 'watercolour' and voila. I have printed it on watercolour paper which gives it a real feeling of a watercolour painting. Try this out on a rainy day...they make wonderful cards.

Framed Prints

It was time to do a change out of my prints at St. Elmo's Fire in Stittsville yesterday. I brought in four framed 8x10 graphite prints that I have here at my home studio. I love to try out new frames for my 'Art' as it can give it such a different feel. Framing is definitely a personal thing yet I think basic black for a graphite drawing is always striking, it helps to 'pop' the darkest tones. This piece sells for $50. If you get a chance stop in to St. Elmo's, it's such a funky little shop with great art and gifts.
